Artist Biography

김지환

한국 오케스트라의 미래를 이끌어갈 지휘자로 평가받고 있는 김지환은 1971년 대한민국 서울에서 태어나 서울대 음대(작곡과 이론 전공)와 한국예술종합학교 음악원에서 오케스트라 지휘 전문사 과정을 졸업했다. 이후 독일 라이프치히 국립음대에서 오케스트라 지휘로 디플롬을 마쳤으며 정치용, 파비오 루이지(Fabio Luise), 케니스 키슬러(Kennith Kiesler), 콜린 메터(Collin metter) 등 세계적인 거장들의 문하에서 수학했다.

2002년 강준일 창작 칸타타 <백범 김구> 프로젝트의 부지휘자를 거쳐, 2006년 독일 라이프치히 국립 음대 재학 시절, 새로운 음악을 소개하는 취지로 시작된 프로젝트 오케스트라 “새 음악”에서 한국의 음악가를 유럽 무대에 알리는 연주를 선보이며 주목받았다.

이후 Jena Philharmonie Orchestra, West Saechsisch Orchestra, Leipzig Musikalische Komedie Orchestra, Greifswald Theater Orchestra, Cottbus Theater Orchestra 등 유럽 유수의 오케스트라를 지휘했으며, 2009년 필하모니아 코리아 정기 연주회를 시작으로 2010년 세종대학교 오페라 <마술피리>, 트리니타스 오케스트라 주관 김수환 추기경 추모 음악회 등의 지휘를 맡았으며, 전주시향, 강남 심포니, 포항시향 등의 객원 지휘자로 활동했다.

트리니타스 체임버 오케스트라 전임 지휘자를 거쳐, 2011년에는 현대 음악을 전문적으로 연주하는 앙상블 판(Ensemble PAN)을 창단, 음악 감독을 맡아 현재까지 꾸준한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 특히 한국 현대작곡가 강준일,최명훈 등의 작품들을 집중적으로 위촉, 초연하면서 완성도 높은 해석과 연주력을 인정받았으며, 2011년과 2014년 진주 이상근 국제음악제 현대 작곡가 집중 연주 초청 공연을 성공 리에 마쳤다.

2012년에는 지역 최초의 민간 방송 교향악단인 대구 MBC 교향악단의 초대 전임지휘자로 선임되어 6회의 정기 연주회를 비롯한 다수의 연주를 통해 지역 문화 발전을 도모했다. 영남대 관현악과 겸임 교수와 클래식 음악의 활성화와 미래 유망주들을 발굴할 목적으로 시작된 대구 “꿈의 오케스트라” 감독을 역임했다. 현재 (사)한국지휘자협회 총무로 활동 중인 김지환은 2014년 7월부터 서울시 유스 오케스트라 단장 겸 상임 지휘자로 재직했다.

Kim Jee-hwan

Regarded as the conductor to lead the future of Korea’s orchestral music, Kim Jee-hwan was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1971, and graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor’s degree in music theory, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Korea National University of Arts School of Music. He then went on to study in Germany, receiving a diploma in orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig. Through these courses, he studied under internationally renowned maestros such as Chung Chi-yong, Fabio Luise, Kenneth Kiesler, and Colin Metters.

     After serving as a deputy conductor for Baekbeom Kim Ku, a cantata composed by Kang Jun-il, in 2002, Kim drew further attention in 2006, whilst studying at the Hochschule in Leipzig, as he conducted works by Korean composers in “Neue Musik,” an orchestra project aimed to introduce new music. Later, he conducted major European orchestras, including the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, Westsächsisch Orchestra, Leipzig Musikalische Komödie Orchestra, Greifswald Theatre Orchestra, and Cottbus State Theatre Orchestra.

Back in South Korea, beginning with regular concerts of the Philharmonia Corea in 2009, Kim has conducted Magic Flute, an opera held at Sejong University, and a tribute concert to Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan organized by the Trinitas Chamber Orchestra. He has also served as a guest conductor for Jeonju Philharmonic Orchestra, matinée concerts of the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra, and the Pohang Philharmonic Orchestra.

After having served as chief conductor for the Trinitas Chamber Orchestra, Kim formed Ensemble PAN in 2011, an ensemble devoted to contemporary music, of which he has been serving as director ever since. The ensemble has been recognized for its remarkable interpretation and performance, particularly of works by contemporary Korean composers like Kang Jun-il and Choi Myung-hun, which it had commissioned and premiered. The ensemble also successfully performed at the Jinju Lee Sang-geun International Music Festival where it was invited to feature exclusively contemporary composers in 2011 and 2014.

In 2012, Kim was appointed to be the first full-time conductor for the Daegu MBC Symphony Orchestra, the first symphony orchestra owned by a private regional broadcasting corporation, and made contributions to the development of the city’s culture through six regular concerts and other performances. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the Department of Instrumental Music of Yeungnam University and directed “The Dream Orchestra,” a project aimed at raising public awareness for classical music and discovering young prodigies. Kim is currently in charge of overall affairs of the Korean Conductors Association, and since July 2014, he has been working as the head and permanent conductor of the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.
